Puccini himself described La fanciulla del West as his best and most important work on the path to a new orchestral idiom.

La fanciulla del West is not Puccini’s best known opera, maybe not even his best - even though Puccini himself held this work in particular high esteem. It takes time to warm up - as do most of his operas - but it is possibly the most colourful and technically most advanced. Also there are lots of felicities in this score that take some time to discover. Dick Johnson’s Ch’ella mi creda in the last act is the only really well known number.

Exactly 101 years after the world premiere of Puccini’s La fanciulla del West at New York’s Metropolitan Opera, Stockholm’s Royal Opera House now presents a brilliant, modern-day interpretation of this rarely played opera. While the lead role is sung by Nina Stemme, one of today’s best youthful-dramatic sopranos, the two male protagonists, John Lundgren and Aleksandrs Antonenko, can hardly be surpassed in vocal artistry and stage presence  . Composer: Giacomo Puccini. Conductor: Morandi, Pier Giorgio. Orchestra: Kundgliga Hovkapellet, Kungliga Operans Herrkör.

Christof Loy's staging provides an effective showcase for her, not least by opening with a film of Stemme in full cowboy gear riding on horseback across the prairies of the Wild West. With tongue subtly in his cheek, Loy sets the opera in the silent film era, sometimes projecting short sections of the action on the back wall, but in other respects staying true to the opera's story and characters.

Christof Loy's 2012 interpretation of Puccini's opera sets the action against the backdrop of a Hollywood Western. Recorded live at the Royal Swedish Opera House, Nina Stemme takes the lead role as Minnie, who falls passionately in love with the most wanted outlaw in the West. Other cast members include John Lundgren, Aleksandrs Antonenko and Niklas Björling Rygert. The conductor is Pier Giorgio Morandi.
