It is a little surprising that Telarc decided to go with the Vadim Repin portrait of Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky for its recording of Paavo Järvi and the Cincinnati Symphony in his best-known orchestral works. Painted as Mussorgsky lay dying in a St. Petersburg hospital, it captured the composer at his most dissolute and chaotic, but as it remains the most famous image of Mussorgsky among the limited amount of iconography left for him, perhaps its use was a foregone conclusion. It certainly does not reflect the vision of the music that's inside.

Pictures at an Exhibition is a suite of ten pieces (plus a recurring, varied Promenade) composed for piano by Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky in 1874. The suite is Mussorgsky's most famous piano composition and has become a showpiece for virtuoso pianists. It has become further known through various orchestrations and arrangements produced by other musicians and composers, with Maurice Ravel's arrangement being by far the most recorded and performed.

Orchestra: Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Conductor: Paavo Jarvi. Composer: M. Mussorgsky. Audio CD (September 23, 2008). Please Note: Requires SACD-compatible hardware. The first thing one must address about this album is the sound engineering. It is very close up, with almost no atmosphere whatsoever. Also, the tonal quality is rather opaque, which seems to be an artifact of the Direct Stream Digital recording technology. Once you adjust to all of this, there is plenty of detail in the recording, and a very wide dynamic range that requires you to turn up the volume to secure the full effect. The performances are highly rewarding.

Mussorgsky originally composed the work for piano following the untimely death of his friend, artist and designer Victor Hartmann. As part of the grieving process, he visited an exhibition of Hartmann’s artwork and each of the piece’s ten movements represents a different painting. Ravel’s celebrated orchestration of the work premiered in October 1922. I have always wanted to record Pictures at Exhibition, said Järvi. There’s a good reason it has become one of the best known pieces in the worl. t’s such an irresistible concept – walking from one painting to another and describing not only.
