In May 2007, the Library of Congress gathered an unprecedented group of musicians together in Washington DC to honor Simon as the 1st recipient of the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. Filmed at the Austin Opry House and out on location, this Willie Nelson Special features great performances by Willie and his band who are joined by special guest Ray Charles for duets with Willie Nelson on six songs. Also featured is a trip to Willie's home town of Abbott, Texas and a chance to explore his roots with many of the people he grew up with. The album featured the hits Marlene On The Wall and Left Of Center. She hit even greater heights with her second album Solitude Standing, which contained the hits Luka and Toms Diner. In many ways, she opened the way for the rush of female singer-songwriters that followed in the late eighties and early nineties.
Most of this material comes from literary events at the Library of Congress or was captured in its Jefferson Building recording studio. Since 1943, the library has hosted an annual Consultant in Poetry (since renamed the Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry) - the first was Allen Tate, the current is Charles Wright - and these events and performances are coordinated under their direction. While the audio archive represents an incredible resource of contemporary American literature, most of it is found on magnetic tape reels that can only be listened to at the library
Festivalgoers can learn about the Library’s diverse collections and services through engaging talks and performances by curators and entertainers at the Library of Congress Town Square. Family-friendly presentations include trivia sessions, an interactive maze illustration by Joe Wos, a special session with illustrator Roz Chast and appearances by the recently announced 2017 National Student Poets, five outstanding youth poets from across the nation for their original work
