The opening Piano Trio No. 1 in C minor, Op. 8 ("Poème"), is a lovely curtain raiser in a single 12-minute movement. Composed when Shostakovich was 16, it has an absolutely characteristic main theme even if the second theme of its big sonata form is a bit softer. Highly recommended for any Shostakovich collection.

Piano Trio No 1 in C minor 'Poeme' Op 8 02. Ophelia's Song (Seven Romances on Poems of Alexander Blok OP 127) 03. Gamayun, the prophet bird 04. We were together 05. The city sleeps. Tracklist: 01. Piano Trio No 1 in C minor 'Poeme' Op 8 02.

Shostakovich’s Second Piano Trio, on the other hand, is one of the greatest masterpieces of his maturity and has received countless performances and recordings by Russians and non-Russians alike. I compared the Florestan with the Borodin Trio on Chandos, my benchmark for this work. In conclusion, this CD is worth every penny for the Seven Romances alone, but the trios can also compete with the best of past recordings. Hyperion’s production is up to its usual high standard, with excellent booklet notes by Robert Philip and a cover illustration of Viktor Vasnetsov’s painting of the prophet bird, Gamayun. 2. Trio for Piano and Strings no 2 in E minor, Op. 67 by Dmitri Shostakovich Orchestra/Ensemble: Florestan Trio Period: 20th Century Written: 1944; USSR. 3. Songs (7) for Soprano, Violin, Cello and Piano, Op.
