On Mirror Eye, Psychic Ills go deeper into the drones that made Dins such a breakthrough for the band, making those elongated spaces the heart of the music rather than a setting for it. Significant portions of the album were improvised in the studio, and this might explain why the playing and ebb and flow from song to song feel as organic as they do. Mirror Eye is also remarkably understated, trading most of Psychic Ills ' suffocating rock for less obvious ways of exploring their tribal, trippy leanings

Mirror Eye ‎(CD, Album). referencing Mirror Eye, LP, Ltd, TP, TSR065.

Mirror Eye. Social Registry. Contemporaries of Gang Gang Dance and Black Dice, NYC's Psychic Ills here fully indulge their abstract tendencies, eschewing all traditional means of songcraft for a record that is almost wholly improvised. A staple on the Todd P circuit and tourmates of better-known, similarly minded experimental acts such as Black Dice and Gang Gang Dance, NYC's Psychic Ills have been making a racket since the early part of this decade. We last heard from them in 2006 when the band released Dins, which garnered moderate praise for combining drone-y elements with loosely structured melodies.

Mirror Eye, the second album from Psychic Ills, manages to find that ambient sweet spot more often than not. The New York City-based quartet know what they are doing when it comes to this type of music. Atmospheric synth sounds abound, covering most of the songs in a layer (sometimes thick, sometimes thin) of electronic noise. Psychic Ills seem to have chosen a very specific style, and they work hard at it. Mirror Eye sounds loose and at least partially improvised, as if the same songs may sound completely different from one concert to another, or even one recorded take to another. But the moody, hypnotic vibe is present throughout the entire album. The opening "Mantis" rambles along for nearly 11 minutes, starting with wobbling synths, adding simple percussion flourishes, a bassline, and eventually little snatches of echoing guitar.
