Elegy: Schoenberg, Bartók, Krenek. Elegy: Schoenberg, Bartók, Krenek.

Album title: Pina Napolitano. Composer(s): Bartok, Krenek, Schoenberg. Works: Bartók Piano Concerto No. 3 Krenek Symphonic Elegy Schoenberg Accompaniment to a cinematographic scene. Performer: Pina Napolitano (piano); Liepa¯ja Symphony Orchestra/Atvars Lakstigala. By the time the Second World War was really underway in 1940, Schoenberg, Bartók and Ernst Krenek had all taken refuge in the United States. Schoenberg’s Piano Concerto (1942) reflects the anxieties of the early years of the war, Bartók’s (1945) more his own sense of mortality at its conclusion, while Krenek’s Elegy (1946) laments the death of Anton Webern, one of the war’s last casualties. But all three works heave with nostalgia for the Central European culture their composers had lost.

Bartók: Piano Concerto No. 3, BB 127, Sz. 119. 27:19. Having received widespread acclaim for her disc of Schoenberg’s complete solo piano works, Pina Napolitano now brings her unique combination of fierce intellect and emotional insight to Schoenberg’s Piano Concerto, in her second disc for Odradek, entitled ELEGY, with the Liepaja Symphony Orchestra conducted by Atvars Lakstigala.

Praise for Pina Napolitano – Schoenberg piano works: rare penetration, understanding, grace and elegance. BBC Music Magazine Napolitano has a tensile strength to her playing that is distinctly hers International Piano Magazine consistently brilliant Arts Desk Schoenberg himself would probably have approved The Examiner in her hands the music sounds eminently approachable even when at its most iconoclastic Music Web International
