Emil Gilels was the first Soviet artist to be allowed to travel extensively in the West. After the war, he toured Europe starting from 1947 as a concert pianist, and made his American debut in 1955 playing Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in Philadelphia. He taught as a professor for the Moscow Conservatory after 1952. In his later years he remained in his native Russia and rarely ventured abroad.

Emil Gilels died suddenly in 1985. Together with Sviatoslav Richter he was one of the unquestionably great Russian pianists of the postwar Soviet era, and part of an outstanding generation of players from around the world, even though, compared with Richter, Gilels's art was not fully represented on disc. He would have been 90 this year, and Deutsche Grammophon has marked the anniversary with three major reissues

Emil Gilels is among the most celebrated pianists of the 20th century. His phenomenal career really started to take flight in 1938, when he won the Eugène Ysaÿe competition in Brussels (now known as the Queen Elisabeth Competition). Shortly afterwards, the Concertgebouw welcomed him for the very first time. This would be the start of a longstanding relationship with some of the greatest conductors of the day, including Mravinsky, Maazel, Jochum, Bernstein, Böhm and Karajan.
