One-woman act Ill Ease (Elizabeth Sharp) has pages of press clippings that include raves for her past albums from Magnet, Pulse, Punk Planet, Alternative Press, and CMJ Weekly. But this should be of little interest to anyone, except perhaps those who dig extremely repetitive, droning indie-pop. Almost nothing happens here. So Elizabeth Sharp, of the one-woman band Ill Ease, recorded this album by herself in Room 124 of the "Holiday Sin" outside Altantic City- that benighted second-tier den of evil, with its casinos, partial-nudity strip clubs and grotesquely venal boardwalk attractions. And this is a vulgar little record, part loopy and part seedy of the soul? Sharp, former member of New Radiant Storm King and Skinner Pilot, tries to create a twisted vibe, but the record works best when it's good clean rock 'n' roll.

One-woman band Elizabeth Sharp is the skewed mastermind behind Live at the Holiday Sin, her third full-length release under the name Ill Ease. The title is inspired by the origin of the recording: Sharp recorded everything inside a room of a rundown motel near Atlantic City, New Jersey. Even without the geographic specifics, though, the title is appropriate, because this music sounds every bit as dirty and perverse as what goes on behind closed doors of cheap lodgings. Ultimately, for all their sonic innovations, the songs on Holiday Sin come off like incomplete sketches. Sharp clearly has a lot of talent, but it won't result in a truly great album until she's figured out how to work around her weaknesses or at least better integrate them into her sound. ill ease live at the holiday sin.

The latest album from Ill Ease – the solo project of former New Radiant Storm King drummer Elizabeth Sharp – is titled The Exorcist. While the coy names of her previous releases Greatest Tits and Live at the Holiday Sin make me giggle, the new album elicited a certain amount of dread. Yes, I’m still haunted by the film of the same name, memories of the movie inevitably crawling on my flesh. The next time I see it I may need to seek the aid of a young priest and an old priest to comfort me (as the actor said to the bishop). The album The Exorcist, however, doesn’t leave the same creepy feeling.
