Complete your Simple Minds collection. Where this box fails is on the live concert from Barrowlands. I have heard jaw dropping live performances from the Tour De Monde that supported this release, but the Barrowlands show is not one of them. Instead, it is a glimpse into the dark immediate future of Simple Minds to come. Jim Kerr’s voice (he did not know how to properly sing at this age) is shot to hell and ragged as it would be in the next 15 years of live recordings we’d hear from Simple Minds. And it was too early in the tour to have captured the radical rearrangement of King Is White And In The Crowd that was built around.

Sparkle in the Rain is the sixth studio album by Scottish rock band Simple Minds, released in February 1984 by record label Virgin in the UK and A&M in the US. A breakthrough commercial success for the band, the record peaked at number 1 in the UK Albums Chart on 18 February 1984, and reached the top 20 in numerous other countries around the world, including New Zealand, Netherlands, Sweden, Canada, Switzerland, Germany, Norway, and Australia.

For Sparkle in the Rain, they sought U2 producer Steve Lillywhite, whose approach helped shape their performances into a forceful, direct set of commercial rock designed to shake nosebleed seats. Despite frontman Jim Kerr's vaguest gesturing and most voluble bellowing to that point, the move worked. The pounding "Waterfront," hurtling "Speed Your Love to Me," and gleaming "Up on the Catwalk," the album's singles, all reached the Top 30 in the . and by the end of the year, the band was headlining North American hockey arenas and amphitheaters.

Listen free to Simple Minds – Sparkle in the Rain (Up On the Catwalk, Book of Brilliant Things and more). Sparkle In The Rain, Simple Minds' US breakthrough album, was released on February 6, 1984. The single "Waterfront," which reached number one in a few European countries, remains one of the band's signature songs to this day, as well as "Speed Your Love to Me" and "Up on the Catwalk". The album also contains a cover version of Lou Reed's song "Street Hassle". Sparkle in the Rain was produced by Steve Lillywhite, who.

  • The AllMusic review is incomprehensible to me. This is quite simply one of the best albums of the 80s in terms of songwriting and performance. An exquisite work, by turns exhilarating and heartbreaking. Start here if you want to explore Simple Minds, and it wouldn't be a disaster if you stayed here.

  • Incomprehensible is not enough said. Sparkle in The Rain was both critically acclaimed and commercially successful when it came out and it has been often chosen as one of their best ever since. A big breakthrough in their career with Steve Lillywhite on board as a producer. It cannot be measured against either New Gold Dream or the next one - Once Upon A Time as each one is unique on its own. This album is a strong five star product. Simply, purest Minds.

  • A sellout sound without truly selling out. The bombastic choruses are there. The hooks are there. The pandering.... IS NOT! Somehow, somewhere , they managed to go for the big commercial sound...succeed and somehow not sign on - COMPLETELY - with their Faustian deal ... (that happens later but I digress). It's big. It's bombastic and strangely enough its genuine and authentic.
