Mel and Tim were an American soul music duo active from 1969 to 1974 and best known for the hit record "Backfield in Motion" (1969). They are also well known for "Good Guys Only Win in the Movies" and "Starting All Over Again" (1972). Melvin McArthur Hardin and Hubert Timothy McPherson were cousins from Holly Springs, Mississippi, who traveled to Chicago, where they were discovered by Gene Chandler.

Cousins Mel Hardin and Tim McPherson, both from Holly Springs, Mississippi, were discovered by Gene Chandler in Chicago. Mel's mother, Yolanda Hardin, signed them to her label Bamboo Records (4) in 1969. Their first single, "Backfield in Motion", went gold in 1969 with over one-million sales. In 1971, they were signed by Barry Beckett at Muscle Shoals sound studio and recorded "Starting All Over Again", which master was bought by Stax Records, starting a string of Stax hits and sort of filling the gap left by Sam & Dave after the split with Atlantic in 1968.

Although it wasn't released long after Mel & Tim's big 1972 hit "Starting All Over Again," the duo's self-titled album (their second for Stax) wasn't a commercial success. It has a little more personality than the average LP issued by Stax in its final years, but not that much more. Largely comprised of material from Prince Philip Mitchell (who wrote "Starting All Over Again"), and co-produced by Barry Beckett and Roger Hawkins (who also played on the record) of Muscle Shoals Sound, it's fairly smooth early-'70s duo-sung soul.
