Brown Sugar, D’Angelo’s debut, became an important forebear of what’s now called neo-soul. Released before Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite (1996) and Erykah Badu’s Baduizm (1997), D’Angelo changed the sound of R&B while paying homage to its pioneers: Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Curtis Mayfield and the like. The success of Brown Sugar paved the way for artists like Anthony Hamilton, Jill Scott, and Alicia Keys to break into the mainstream and achieve their own levels of fame. It harkened back to the essence of soul and jazz music, live records cut at the Village Vanguard or Five Spot. The title track and the album felt honest and organic; you could feel the lush instrumentation, the sincerity in the lyrics, the warmth of the keys. This wasn’t R&B purposely intended for younger ears; Brown Sugar was grown folks music, it just so happened that a 21-year-old created it.

With his debut album, Brown Sugar, the 21-year-old D'Angelo crashed down some of those barriers. D'Angelo concentrates on classic versions of soul and R&B, but unlike most of his contemporaries, he doesn't cut and paste older songs with hip-hop beats; instead, he attacks the forms with a hip-hop attitude, breathing new life into traditional forms. Not all of his music works - there are several songs that sound incomplete, relying more on sound than structure.

Lyrics to "Brown Sugar" song by D'Angelo: Let me tell you 'bout this girl Maybe I shouldn't I met her in Philly and her name was Brown Sugar. Brown Sugar babe, I gets high off your love I don't know how to behave. I want some of your Brown Sugar Sugar Oohooh. Oh Sugar when you're close to me You love me right down to my knees And whenever you let me hit it Sweet like the honey when it comes to me Skin is caramel with those cocoa eyes Even got a big sister by the name of Chocolate Thai.

Because Brown Sugar is groove based, it does one thing and does it incredibly well. It leads off with the title track and Alright, two songs that are so perfect I refuse to dedicate any more than this sentence to them and risk hyperbole. Jonz in my Bonz barely has a structure yet remains compelling. Damn Mother er is one of the few murder ballads that actually sounds menacing. It also sounds luxurious; how he pulled that off I’ll never quite know. Brown Sugar isn’t just a great soul record though, its also effortlessly listenable. D’Angelo took 5 years to create another album, the peerless Voodoo in 2000. We’ve been waiting ever since. It’s been a worrying wait. He’s struggled with addiction and perfectionism for over a decade but the sabbatical may be coming to an end. He’s slowly crept back to the stage, performing new songs in the process and sounding amazing doing it.

  • For a very long time, I have been searching for music that is relaxing, yet not boring. I wanted a singer, with smooth, cool music, that I could listen to many times without getting tired of it. And, to my great pleasure, I found this brilliant album. I wish I had found this kind of music before. Just listen to songs like "Brown Sugar" , "Sh*t, Damn, Moderf*er" , "Cruising" and "When We Get By". Favourite album of the year for sure!
