Mercury is the final album of original material from alternative band The Prayer Chain, released in 1995. Originally the band wanted to do a worship-based album. Bassist Eric Campuzano says "When we were were discussing this record, a lot of people said Shawl was a negative album, so we all kinda wanted to do this real drony 'get lost in the music' type record - only with praise songs.

The Prayer Chain were touted as the most commercially promising Christian alternative act of the early 1990's. Then they released this album. It is a masterpiece of mood, darkness/light, sonic exploration & melody. Commercial suicide leading to all manner of drama with record labels and career possibilities. A must have for any self-respecting fan of 90's alternative music. I personally call it the "Disintegration of the Christian market'. Unfortunately the Christian market was too saccharine for this level of musical maturity. Reply Notify me Helpful.

Where Shawl wanted to be an important record, Mercury actually is one, a haunting study in numbness that appropriates planetary imagery as a potent metaphor for human isolation. Eric Campuzano's lyrics, so labored and awkward in the past, are perfectly suited to Mercury's languid, chilly atmosphere. As they did on Shawl, the Prayer Chain slam the door on bandwagoneers with the opening track.

The Prayer Chain was a 1990s Christian alternative rock band. The band has been called "the epitome of the Christian underground". The Prayer Chain was known for producing moody, angst-ridden music which was, in turn, the result of creative differences within the band and with their record label.

The Prayer Chain was THE seminal underground Christian band in the mid-90’s. During the overhaul in Christian music scene at the time, the larger labels were snatching up young alternative bands, hoping to cash in on the trend. One of those bands was The Prayer Chain. From their inception they had cultivated a sound that was unlike anything in Christian or secular music. Their first album spawned a minor single Crawl on the Christian radio channels. As they had began the sessions on their second album, which was Mercury, their label was not happy with the direction they were headed. Unfortunately, no matter how pathetic it may seem, Christian labels were trying to cultivate ‘alternatives’ to the secular world. For every Nirvana, they wanted a ‘Christian’ Nirvana to sell. The Prayer Chain’s first album, more or less, fit into the grunge category fairly easily. However, that sound was gone, entirely.
