Avant-Garde Art of the Early 20th Century. The first three decades of twentieth century art gave rise to a wave of revolutionary movements and styles. Avant-gardism during the 1940s onwards, came in fits and starts. This was partly because abstract art dominated, and there was very little about abstraction that was fundamentally new. In America, it's true, Jackson Pollock (1912-56) invented action-painting; Mark Rothko (1903-70) invested his abstract compositions with colourful emotion, while Robert Motherwell and Barnett Newman invested theirs with narrative; but by the mid-60s abstraction was a spent force. Meantime, in Europe, during the 1950s and early 1960s, a taste of avant-gardism was provided by the experimental artists Jean Dubuffet (see Art Brut) and Yves Klein, as well as the Swiss sculptor and Jean Tinguely (1925-91) who joined Alexander Calder in developing kinetic art.

What is avant-garde ? Read about the most groundbreaking art movements of the 20th century and how they affected music, theatre, photography, visual arts. Henri de Saint-Simon introduced the term avant-garde to declare that artists should serve as the avant-garde in the general movement of social progress and radical reforms. Precursors of the 20th Century Art Movements. One of the main characteristics of avant garde was going against the academic understanding of art, the imposed rules on what an artwork should look like and the way it should be produced.

Many avant-garde artists embraced the revolution. It suddenly turned out that their artistic ideas were resonant with political slogans, such as Kazimir Malevich's proposal to burn all paintings and exhibit their ashes in museums, because - he asserted - there would be no art after Suprematism. Avant-garde fitted the bill nicely. In exchange, the government became the primary customer for artistic works and also the main censorship authority (although it took artists some time to fully understand this latter function). Monumental propaganda. Revolutionary design. The Utopian desire to transform everything within reach gave birth to the idea that people could be influenced not just through monumental arts but also by ways of creating a new visual world around them so that in everyday life, modern objects would be ubiquitous in their surroundings.

There is so much happening at once that you need to choose a thread-be that a saxophone, bass, or the piano-and follow it throughout the improvisations. The way that each thread interacts with all the others is where the magic of this LP lies. Sun Ra is an otherworldly figure in that he seems to be omniscient, understanding these associations as they occurred in real time. Through many years and multiple collaborations, these two have been injecting interesting influences into jazz music. And on this particular album, they integrated Spanish and Latin influences. Listening through this context brings so much substance to the surface because you can hear the frustration in the music.

the avant-garde definition: 1. the painters, writers, musicians, and other artists whose ideas, styles, and methods are very original or modern in comparison to the period in which they live, or the work of these artists: 2.
