Beautiful album - Blood and Roses is probably a major underground hit in some 80's pop collections. Good use of vocals, space and tasteful, rock-orientated approach."Especially for You" get's a double thumbs up fer using rock instrumentation, and NOT using Simmons drums or synthesizer. If you've ever been stuck in a shopping center and wanted to barf from the sound of "Drive" by the Cars, then this album is the panacea to that type of pop sound.The track "Groovy Tuesday" or whatever is an appalling Beatles rip off, they might as well have borrowed lyrics directly from Revolver and waited to see if there were any legal issues. Still, the music throughout is as good or stronger than many of the notable acts of their day, cool drum groove also . The Smithereens specialize in mixing sixties British pop with driving power pop and maybe a touch of the Smiths? Not as dreary though, more like some imagined past rock classic, with an original edge. Recommended.
