Mysterious Traveller is the fourth studio album of Weather Report and was released in 1974. This album marked the end of bassist Miroslav Vitouš's tenure with the band. Vitouš was replaced by Alphonso Johnson. Another addition to the line-up is drummer Ishmael Wilburn. Greg Errico was the drummer for the tour between the previously released Sweetnighter and this album, but declined an invitation to be a permanent member of the band.

  • Mysterious Traveller marked the debut of Alphonso Johnson as the resident bass player. In fact, you could say that the incarnations of Weather Report are distinguished by the person manning the bass chair. Alphonso Johnson injected a funkier groove into the Weather Report sound. Just as his predecessor, Miroslav Vitous, played the bass as an equal lead voice. And like Vitous he amplified and augmented his bass sound with distortion, feedback, and wah-wah sounds. The songs on this production are more structured but still focused on elongated grooves and improvisation. Wayne Shorter and Alphonso dominate "Cucumber Slumber" and "Mysterious Traveller", while Zawinul does the same on "Nubian Sundance" and "Jungle Book". The band explores the use of space and sound on "Scarlett Woman." "American Tango" co-penned by Zawinul and Vitous is an underrated intense number. Zawindul's keyboard wizardry took another step in development. Again the album marked a transition from grooves and improv to more structure, but all of the prior elements are all there. Just on an elevated level. Highly recommended.

  • Not the direction I expected, but you can still hear the Weather Report characteristics prominent from their previous albums -- just in a more linear structure. This is the sound that many people will come to associate with them in the future.
