The five nails on the cover of Gideon’s third album allude to the Crucifixion as well as the piercing yet redemptive nature of the band’s music overall. Calloused doesn’t disappoint thanks to the Alabama metalcore outfit’s ferocious lyric content and blistering sonic thrust. Songs like Savage, World of Hurt, and Drifter are driven home with potent breakdowns and crushing yet agile rhythms. The delicate instrumental textures of The Pulse provide a contemplative interlude between the visceral assault of The Limit and Prison Eyes. With singer David McWhorter leading the charge, Gideon battle demons with a desperate fury that’s backed up with unshakable faith.
