It was co-written by Jerry Gillespie and Ed Penney. Penney was a record company executive who liked Gibbs's voice when he first heard her audition tape, but felt she needed stronger material. Country singer and songwriter Terri Gibbs earned a lot of fans with her single, "Somebody's Knockin'," which quickly became a surprise nationwide country hit. It was also used as the first track for this debut album of the same name, released under the MCA Records label in 1980. A year later her songs landed her an Academy of Country Music's Best New Female Vocalist Award and the Country Music Association's Horizon Award. The album brought her a much-deserved Grammy Award nomination the following year, and a chance to appear on the Grand Ole Opry.
