Every song a mountaintop vista with a clear view to the horizon, unencumbered by clouds, in all directions. Departure Songs became a way of unpacking and dealing with loss. We have a song/video from our Maybe album called 'Mono No Aware. The simplest translation of this Japanese phrase means, 'The sadness of things. I feel like Departure Songs is our expression of the experience of 'Mono No Aware. I do think and feel that ultimately all of us are writing our own songs of departure just by living our lives.

Departure Songs is the sixth studio album (and first double album) by American ambient/post-rock band Hammock. It was released on October 2, 2012 by the band's own label, Hammock Music. Departure Songs was met with positive critical reception. John Diliberto, the host of Echoes, named Departure Songs the No. 1 album of the year for 2012 in his annual year-end "Top 10 Albums" list.

If Hammock's fifth album is something of an extension and consolidation of their past work - if nothing else there's a definite sign of increased ambitions with its two CDs' worth of music - it's also a flat-out triumphant one, recorded with the assistance of Tim Powles, who guested with his Church bandmate Steve Kilbey on the previous year's Asleep.
