Ravel: L'Enfant et les Sortileges. Ernest Ansermet 's approach to L'Enfant et les Sortilèges highlights the perspective of the Child. The opening motif for two oboes, for example, is meandering and annoying, perfectly reflecting the Child's boredom and peevishness. The extreme eccentricities of the apparitions are heard in high relief, emphasizing the individuality of the vocal lines and the stunning clarity of the orchestral details.

L'enfant et les sortilèges: Fantaisie lyrique en deux parties (The Child and the Spells: A Lyric Fantasy in Two Parts) is an opera in one act, with music by Maurice Ravel to a libretto by Colette. It is Ravel's second opera, his first being L'heure espagnole. Written from 1917 to 1925, L'enfant et les sortilèges was first performed in Monte Carlo in 1925 under the baton of Victor de Sabata.

Maurice Ravel Composer. Ernest Bour Conductor. Maîtrise de la Radioffusion Française. French Radio National Chorus. In some ways, L'enfant et les sortileges is an ideal opera for the gramophone. One's imagination can supply things which even the most innovative stage director couldn't achieve. This performance, originally issued as a set of six 78s (and then shortly afterwards as an LP), was the first recording, made 23 years after the premiere

Well I purchased this CD as one who enjoys the music of Ravel, and as there seems few extant recording of L'heure espagnole let alone the coupling of the other opera penned by him L'enfant et les sortileges, my only reservation was the sometimes questionable quality of the offerings by the Opera D'oro label.
