The pieces selected by Hamelin may be called miniatures, but they are hardly miniature in any way except performance time. All were written by pianist/composers, including a couple by Hamelin himself. All but two were written in the twentieth century, although a couple are paraphrases on nineteenth century works and, in the case of Hamelin 's Etude No. 6, a tribute to Scarlatti 's eighteenth century keyboard music (which apparently gets audience laughs at live performances because of the leaps and cross-hand maneuvers)
Kaleidoscope Marc-André Hamelin. It is the album that really made me fall in love with Hamelin's work. This album is most definitely worth your money. Marc Andre Hamelin is an absolutely amazing pianist, one could say he is a virtuoso. His precision with which he plays these pieces is above accurate whilst being very in touch with the subtleties as well. You really can't go wrong with this. If you like Chopin or Liszt give this a listen. More By Marc-André Hamelin.
Marc-Andre Hamelin Etude No. 6 Essercizio Per Pianoforte (Omaggio A Domenico Scarlatti). 9. 09. Jules Massenet Valse Folle. 19. Alexander Glazunov Trans. Marc-Andre Hamelin Petit Adagio (Extrait Des ‘Saisons’). 20. Nikolai Kapustin Toccatina, Op. 36. 3:05.
Marc-Andre Hamelin is clearly a fearless pianist - in both his playing and his programming. This recording has many relatively unknown composers, but after hearing Hamelin's work on their behalf, you'll wonder why they aren't better known. The opener, "Valse Phantastique" by Edna Bentz Woods, is spectacular and pretty much sets the tone for the entire disc.
Marc-André Hamelin is perhaps the most equipped pianist alive today to record an album of this sort (the only other name to spring to mind is Volodos). Its very ethos squares exactly with a pianist of Hamelin’s talents. One needs only to look at his Hyperion discography to confirm this: discs of Alkan (including the Symphony for Solo Piano on CDA67218), Busoni (the titanic Piano Concerto on CDA67143) and Scriabin (Sonatas, CDA67131/2) all act as testimony . Kaleidoscope’ is the title of the disc; kaleidoscopic could aptly describe Hamelin’s playing. Some may already be familiar (Rachmaninov’s Polka de . and Poulenc’s Intermezzo in A flat, for example). Others have lain in wait for an outing such as this one and yet others are fresh from Mr Hamelin’s pen.
08. Marc-André Hamelin Etude No. 6 Essercizio per pianoforte (Omaggio a Domenico Scarlatti).
This is a sortable discography of French Canadian pianist and composer Marc-André Hamelin. He records exclusively for the Hyperion label, although he has recorded for other labels in the past. In addition to the works of commonly heard composers, he has recorded a great deal of non-standard repertoire, such as music of Charles-Valentin Alkan, Leopold Godowsky, Georgy Catoire, Sophie Carmen Eckhardt-Gramatté, as well as his own compositions.
