Extra Life - Secular Works. A sign of truly transcendent, challenging music is a critic's inability to explain, judge, and critique it. In the case of Extra Life's Secular Works, I can hardly listen to it without being confounded. Stringing together a concise narrative expounding the pros and cons of the album is a product of stringing together basic thoughts or at the very least an emotional reaction, which is a little bit of a problem with this album.

First full length offering of avant-garde experimental indie rock with medieval musings from the Brooklyn band. Wildly ambitious and utterly unique, Secular Works is a challenging but compulsive listen, as utterly incomprehensible as it is undeniably immediate.

Formed in 2007, Extra Life combines elements of dark romantic pop a-la Bowie’s Berlin period, aggressive math rock a-la Slint, Modern Classical Compositions and Medieval vocal music, which the album title, Secular Works, refers to. Secular Works is without a doubt one of the most unique albums we’ve ever heard. It is challenging and rewarding, complex but melodic, intellectual but within reach. For fans of Xiu Xiu, Dirty Projectors, The Dead Science and Sun City Girls.

Yet 'Secular Works' concludes, as befits its scattering of devotional subtexts, with an a capella hymn, Looker's more idiosyncratically tremulous extremes recalling a more approachable Antony Hegarty. It offers an extraordinarily multi-faceted experience, perfectly pitched between welcoming, ancestrally familiar communal song and alienating, willfully abstruse constructions.
