One Piece at a Time is the 54th album by American country singer Johnny Cash, released in 1976 on Columbia Records. One Piece at a Time," which was a hit, is a humorous tale of an auto worker on the Detroit assembly line who puts together a car out of parts he swipes from the plant. Sold Out of Flag Poles" also charted as a single, reaching on the country singles charts

One Piece at a Time" is a country novelty song written by Wayne Kemp and recorded by Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Three in 1976. It was the last song performed by Cash to reach number one on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and the last of Cash's songs to reach the Billboard Hot 100, on which it peaked at number 29. The singer leaves his home in Kentucky in 1949 to pursue work at General Motors in Detroit, Michigan

I'd get it one piece at a time And it wouldn't cost me a dime You'll know it's me when I come through your town I'm going to ride around in style I'm going to drive everybody wild Because I'll have the only one there is a round. when we got through Well, that's when we noticed that we only had one tail-fin About that time my wife walked out And I could see in her eyes that she had her doubts But she opened the door and said Honey, take me for a spin So we drove up town just to get the tags And I headed her.

In the mid-'70s, Johnny Cash was holding his own against the onslaught of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and intense funk that ruled the airwaves. The trademark shuffling twang of the Tennessee Three remained an attractive feel, unique and apparently impossible to copy, but there was more to it than that.

Album: This Is Johnny Cash (1973). Darrell from EugeneParts of this song remind me of the Rambler (AMC)-powered 1932 Studebaker coupe that I started in 1959 and finished in 1962. It had fenders from four different motorcycles, 4 headlights, MGA seats, Corvette gauges, et al. I transported most of the parts in a cattle truck, and I sold the Studebaker in 1969 to pay my income taxes. I no longer have any pictures.
