Radio-Philharmonie Hannover des NDR conducted by Jorg-Peter Weigle. Thus cpo are to be congratulated on finally completing their Draeseke symphony cycle with the NDR Radiophilharmonie of Hanover under conductor Jörg-Peter Weigle with this disc of the composer’s First and Fourth Symphonies, together with the Overture to his opera Gudrun. I say ’finally’ because these recordings have in fact been in the can since August 2002 and have accordingly been long awaited by committed Draesekeaner!

Jörg-Peter Weigle leads vigorous, confident, and splendidly managed performances of both symphonies, beautifully played by the Hanover Radio Philharmonic. He clearly relishes the opportunities for humor that Draeseke offers in the finales of both works and captures the curious bittersweet quality of the symphony’s second-movement march with complete sympathy. CPO’s sonics also are first class, but the notes, while German in their exactitude, are positively British in their provincialism (defensively referring, for example, to the composer himself as sublime ).

Two symphonies by Draeseke complete the CPO set. The First is flawed but with its strength concentrated in the first two movements. The Fourth is fascinating and well worth getting to know. The Gudrun overture is a fine addition to the ranks of late-romantic operatic preludes.
