Born out of the release of Matt Mays’ debut solo album (Matt Mays Sonic Records 2002), El Torpedo began playing a steady line up of shows in their native Nova Scotia.

Matt Mays was originally in the Guthries, a roots-cum-alt. country band that enjoyed some success with a few albums. On this, his sophomore solo album, the singer has utilized an almost pristine balance - fusing at times the jagged, loud garage rock of Neil Young into a tighter, more polished Tom Petty format. This gorgeous combination makes it easily one of the more impressive albums you'll hear, exemplified to a T on the rollicking opener, "Stand Down at Sundown.

  • The album opens with a simple guitar strum on ‘Stand Down at Sundown’ that immediately grabs your attention and develops into a western-esque epic that perfectly starts Matt Mays + El Torpedo. The very next song (Travellin’) is one of my favourites on the whole album, just for its beautiful mix of Neil Young and that Canadian rock sound. There's not a single song on this album that I dislike; it holds a wide array of soft, southern style rock (if you can really call it that) with beautiful mixes of steel guitar, harmonica, keyboards and even some harmony between singers. The album does a great job of utilizing a pure sound on the guitars but also hits you with a heaviness every time the bass comes in. The highlight of this album though, is Matt’s unforgettable voice. He has a beautiful, slight raspiness to it that works perfectly with both the softer and harder rock songs on the album. Every song on this album tells a story as well, it’s the kind of thing you listen to a long road trip and just reminisce. Album Rating: 4½ starsFavourite Songs: Travellin’, Stand Down at Sundown, On the Hood, Lost Souls.
