She is known for her tremendous control and versatility along with the depth on her instrument. She has an exceptional and natural ability to play the ‘Gayaki Ang’ style. Her music is popularly referred as singing guitar.

Kamala Shankar (born in 1966 in the Tanjore district of Tamil Nadu), is a Hindustani classical guitar player. She is married to sitar player Rajeev Janardan, with whom she performs. Shankar is the first woman to have been awarded a doctorate in guitar. Kamala was trained in music by her mother from the age of six, and went on to study with khyal singer Channulal Mishra and sitar maestro Bimalendu Mukherjee.
