I'm not a diehard Cocteau Twins fan, but many of these live versions to me are better, and SOUND better, than their studio counterparts. Blind Deaf Dumb" for example has that high-pitch melody much quieter.
It's familiar somehow, but over-produced into something usually described as otherworldly or ethereal. The Cocteau Twins are the perfect example of twomb-rock. Twins are together in the womb. And the Cocteau Twins were also womb to the development of a new generation of independent rock, including groups such as Dead Can Dance and Pale Saints. The two-disc compilation of live BBC Sessions recorded between 1982-1996? You got it- buried alive! Trapped and kicking to get out, in a twomb.
Cocteau Twins were founded in Grangemouth, Scotland in 1980 by Robin Guthrie, Will Heggie and Elizabeth Fraser. Will Heggie departed the group in 1983, and Simon Raymonde joined in 1984. Over the course of sixteen years and more than a dozen records, they became famous for their trademark ethereal soundscapes and soaring vocal melodies that influenced subsequent generations of post-punk musicians. The group officially disbanded in 1998 while recording the follow-up album to the 1996 record Milk and Kisses.
Cocteau Twins were a Scottish rock band active from 1979 to 1997. The original members were singer Elizabeth Fraser, guitarist Robin Guthrie and bassist Will Heggie, who was replaced by t Simon Raymonde in 1983. The group has earned much critical praise for its innovative, ethereal sound and the distinctive soprano vocals of Fraser, which often seemed to veer into glossolalia and mouth music. Much of the first disk was taken from a series of early '80s Peel sessions. The second disk contained several tracks recorded during the group's performance on Saturday Live.
