Charles Munch (French pronunciation: ; born Charles Münch; 26 September 1891 – 6 November 1968) was an Alsacian symphonic conductor and violinist. Noted for his mastery of the French orchestral repertoire, he was best known as music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Munch was born in Strasbourg, Alsace-Lorraine (at that period annexed by the German Empire). Erich Leinsdorf (born Erich Landauer; February 4, 1912 – September 11, 1993) was an Austrian-born American conductor. He performed and recorded with leading orchestras and opera companies throughout the United States and Europe, earning a reputation for exacting standards as well as an acerbic personality. He also published books and essays on musical matters.

This historical footage has been restored using the greatest care and state-of-the-art techniques. Disc 3: Erich Leinsdorf. Ludwig van Beethoven, "Egmont" Overture (April, 1969); Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky, Symphony No. 5 in E minor (April, 1969); Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Serenade No. 9 in D major (January, 1963). This five DVD set focuses on the three conductors of the Boston Symphony Orchestras during the 1960's-Charles Munch (1949-1962), Erich Leinsdorf (1962-1969), and William Steinberg (1969-1972, although two selections from a concert he guest conducted in 1962 are included). These broadcasts are important not only in that they allow comparison of the styles of three very different conductors, but also because of the pioneering work of WGBH in the field of televised concerts.
