Demos of songs from Sleigh Bells' Treats first started making their way around the Internet last fall, and they immediately served as conversation starters. The distortion in early track "Crown on the Ground" was so intense that every other second the song seemed on the verge of shutting down. Straight A's" has some of the electro-punk rage of Crystal Castles, the less frantic tracks like "Rachel" have a bit of shoegaze, and the pacing of the album is just so, taking you right to edge in one song and then pulling you back a few inches in the next. Though both Krauss and Miller have been making music for a while- he in the hardcore band Poison the Well, she in some kind of manufactured teen-pop group that never got off the ground- it's easy to see them as a connected band with the right gimmick at the right time.

One of 2010’s most attention-getting debuts, Sleigh Bells' Treats comes on strong. Derek Miller and Alexis Krauss craft a sound that’s all climax, that sounds like cheap stereos turned up to 11 and boom cars that might actually explode. Nearly all the parts of all the songs on Treats are saturated with distortion that makes them feel even louder than they actually are (which is pretty loud to begin with). Yet their approach is far from lo-fi, and it’s worlds apart from the kind of noise pop that looks back to the halcyon days of four-track recording in the ‘90s.

  • Not a great album really - why? Because it's production design music first, and worthwhile content second. The album consists of: autotuned radio pop vocals over blaring cut and paste "sample rock", by which I mean, basically, simple guitar parts and manipulated samples and beats that are literally cut and pasted across a DAW or similar digital audio programme. The albums angular, aggressive nature suggesting "rock" that of course doesn't rock because the riffs are generally identical and robotic. Emotional and tonal relief comes in the form of "Rill Rill", a melodic pop tune, that's quite charming but entirely unoriginal, as it's arrangement is lifted (verbatim) from a Funkadelic album released in 1971. Taken in small samples, Sleigh Bells are OK, but this is background music for clothing stores and student radio playlists, more than a few weeks listening yields the tracks slightly annoying and devoid of much content.
