The second release from Austin's Sound Team, Into the Lens, borrows a page from the foundational sounds of the psychedelic popsters of the 1960s and the contemporary Elephant 6 artists to create a sprawling 22-song set of varied and challenging indie pop songwriting. Less hit-or-miss than their debut, shades of the more twisted Beach Boys recordings and the burned-out country-rock of the Beachwood Sparks help fill out the almost epic feel of the disc, as it shifts from jaunty fairytale sounds to cryptic faux-hillbilly creepiness

Sound Team was an American band based in Austin, Texas that formed in 2000 around principal songwriters Bill Baird and Matt Oliver. Sanford and Michael Baird left the group in 2006. They released two CD-R albums, Sound Team and Into the Lens. Line-up solidified, early releases and tours. After extensive touring in support of the album, both Sam Sanford and the younger Baird left the band for other pursuits (oil painting and a college degree, respectively).

Good thing our fine fedora-wearing host was kind enough to clue us in. We might have otherwise mistaken Austin's Sound Team for an artist collective trafficking in 2nd-grade-level media. As it turns out, though, the accompanying album Into the Lens is far more than a soundtrack to an imaginary coloring book.
