The early King Diamond material was a continuation of the Mercyful Fate sound, perhaps a bit more vocal-oriented and a bit less thrashy, with lyrics focused on horror stories rather than the Satanic overtones of Fate. After a time Mercyful Fate reformed and King sang in both bands as the two swapped priorities. As of this writing (December 2014), MF is on hold and King is still at it here.
