Arista refused to let Sanders be pictured on the cover or mentioned in the title, resulting in the album being issued as Ed Kelly & Friend, although anyone with even a passing knowledge of Sanders' style immediately recognized his playing. The reissue corrects the title situation and adds five 1992 bonus selections by pianist Kelly to fill out the disc. The first six tunes comprise the original session, and they established a pattern that Sanders faithfully followed throughout his Theresa tenure.

this was, and is, a sleeper recording. his many moods are on display here, and the opening bars of you’ve got to have freedom are a lesson in restraint and the power of simplicity. lift ev’ry voice is my official version of that national anthem.

Kelly spends much of the tune comping on the backbeat, a curious but very effective theme that really drives the tune. His solo, which begins and ends with a series of chords played on the one and three, builds and resolves with a beauty and seeming inevitablility or right-ness that I've rarely heard outside of classical music.

In 1992, Sanders appears on a reissue (Ed Kelly and Pharoah Sanders) for the Evidence label of a recording that he completed for Theresa Records in 1979 entitled Ed Kelly and Friend. The 1992 version contains extra tracks which feature Pharoah's pupil Robert Stewart. In 1994 he traveled to Morocco to record the Bill Laswell-produced album The Trance Of Seven Colors with Gnawa musician Mahmoud Guinia

It was introduced to his discography by someone's error, probably at AMG. I've written all about this
