Mirare s release of Henri Demarquette playing the cello music of Saint-Saëns includes all the major works for cello solo as well as the beloved Carnival of the Animals, which features the instrument prominently. The composer, apparently concerned that the piece was too frivolous, suppressed performances of it and only allowed one movement, Le cygne, (for cello solo) to be published in his lifetime. Saint-Saëns did, however, include a provision which allowed the suite to be published after his death. It was first performed in 1922, and it has since become one of his most popular works

Camille Saint-Saëns composed his Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op. 33 in 1872, when the composer was 37 years old. He wrote this work for the Belgian cellist, viola de gamba player and instrument maker Auguste Tolbecque. Tolbecque was part of a distinguished family of musicians closely associated with the Société des Concerts du Conservatoire, France’s leading concert society. The concerto was first performed on January 19, 1873 at the Paris conservatoire concert with Tolbecque as soloist

36; Serenade from Suite for cello and piano Op. 16; Carnival of the Animals – Henri Demarquette, cello/ Boris Berezovsky and Brigitte Engerer, piano/ Ensemble Orchestra de Paris/ Joseph Swensen – Mirare 108, 67 mins. Wrapping things up, Carnival of the Animals is a refreshing new look at music that never seems to grow old, with Henri Demarquette’s Swan a thing of sultry beauty, and Boris Berezovsky and Brigitte Engerer rushing through their solo riff with a headlong dash to the finish that may catch you by surprise. Recorded at the Radio France studios in Paris, each of the pieces seem to have their own characteristics, not entirely natural perhaps, but clearly reflecting what the musicians must have been after: Clarity of line and elegance of texture, applied with a kind of liquid color.
